New features discovered in iPhone OS 3.1 beta

Posted by DjRaz55 Tuesday, June 30, 2009 0 comments

Here are some new features that have been discovered in iPhone OS 3.1 beta so far:

The baseband has been updated to 5.08.01 - ultrasn0w users should not use the iPhone OS 3.1 beta, otherwise their iPhones could be permanently locked!

iPhone 3GS - When you’re trimming your videos you now have the option of saving the original video by tapping the “Save as copy” button.

Voice Control is finally working over bluetooth now!

When you move your icons around the iPhone vibrates

MMS is enabled by default but does not work for AT&T users

The AT&T profile is updated to 4.2

Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz

There’s now a VideoEditorController API - Allows third party apps to call up video editing UI

Video picker API

I’ll update this post as more features are discovered!

Apple recently released the new iPhone OS 3.1 beta firmware and SDK to developers. If you’re using the ultrasn0w software unlock, DO NOT UPGRADE to iPhone OS 3.1 beta because you may permanently lose your unlock. Apple has updated the baseband to 05.08.01. Remember, even when the final iPhone 3.1 firmware is released you should not update if you want to keep your ultrasn0w unlock. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

2.Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3.Run Cydia or Icy
4.Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.

You can download modified carrier bundles right here. To install this, Follow the steps in my MMS & Tethering iPhone 3.0 3g & 3gS Instructions

Read the whole post in full before attempting anything!

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).

REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.

If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.

1.GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
2.Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
3.Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4.Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5.At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
6.This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
7.redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
8.redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).
To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

  22. Start up your iPhone’s Safari browser and open a web page

  24. This step takes a little while, so be patient

  25. Configure Firefox to use your iPhone proxy

Remember to quit MobileTerminal when you’re done surfing at 3G speeds. Start up MobileTerminal again and hold down the “Home” button until the application force-quits

MMS & Tethering iPhone 3.0 3g & 3gS Instructions

Posted by DjRaz55 Saturday, June 20, 2009 0 comments

First, let's enable IPCC updates on iTunes 8.2.

Mac OS X:
Close iTunes if it is open
Start Terminal (Applications > Utilities)
Run the following command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Windows 2000/XP/Vista (32-bit):
Go to Start -> Run (
type in "command" and hit enter
Type/copy+paste this into the command console that comes up: "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
Hit enter

Windows XP/Vista (64-bit):
Go to Start -> Run (
type in "command" and hit enter
Type/copy+paste this into the command console that comes up: "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
Hit enter

There, now you can update IPCC files as you were able to in 8.1. Now, let's go get us some Carrier Bundle goodness. You can download the modified bundle right here. To install this, follow these steps.

1 Download the file to some location on your computer
2 Plug in your iPhone
3 Start iTunes
4 Click on your iPhone in the device listing in iTunes
5 Alt-Click the "Update" button (Shift-click in Windows)
6 Browse to where you saved the IPCC you downloaded
7 Select this file and click Choose
8 Wait...
9 ???
10 PROFIT!!! er, Success!
11 Reboot Phone

You now have the modified carrier bundle. With this, you can do tethering! But wait, we wanted MMS too! Well, this will unfortunately require you to have some other form of GSM (or better, AT&T) phone. I used a cheap prepaid phone from AT&T's GoPhone system (a Motorola BT60). I'm sure you can borrow one from a friend.

NOTE: AT&T Family Plan users who have a family messaging plan can skip steps 7-11

UPDATE: Seems AT&T may be blocking these steps from immediately taking effect. My best advice is to call AT&T after step 10/11 and before step 12 and tell them your MMS isn't working. They should fix it.

1 Remove the sim cards from both the iPhone and your non-Apple phone
2 Place the iPhone sim card into the non-Apple phone
3 Power on the new phone
4 Make a phone call or two (your voicemail works)
5 Log in to your myWireless account at wireless.att.com
6 It should now say that your device is whatever you put your SIM into. If it doesn't, repeat step 4 a few times.
7 Go to the "Features" tab
8 Select a "Messaging Plan", one that isn't an iPhone plan.
9 Click next and go through all the legal crap
10 You should now have MMS enabled on your account... so...
11 DO NOT ADD AN IPHONE TEXTING PLAN BACK TO YOUR ACCOUNT! EVER! IT WILL DISABLE MMS AGAIN!
12 Swap the iPhone sim card back into the iPhone
13 Reboot the iPhone

You should now have MMS and Tethering working! Tethering is easy on the Mac, simply go into Settings -> General -> Network on the iPhone and turn Tethering on, then plug your phone into your Mac via the normal iPhone cable. Your Mac will see your iPhone as a USB networking device and auto-tether you. There's also an easy step-by-step process to get Bluetooth tethering working, but in my experience it is much slower than over USB.

That's pretty much it, folks. Have fun!
